MDS undertook in 2003 with great pleasure the computer network designing at the University Child Clinic, popularly known as "Tiršova". The design comprised several stages. It was started with the structure cabling of the whole building and introduction of LAN network and continued with the implementation of Cisco IP telephone system. Thus, the pediatric hospital got one of the most modern computer networks of IT telephone systems opening up new vistas for health care.
|
| The Project had the following initial terms of reference: |
| |
| The preliminary design of the computer network had to be based on the state-of-the-art network and communication technologies compliant with the local and global standards in the field of telecommunications and computer communications. |
| Plan for the future implementation of computer network at all the levels of the building of the University Child Clinic: cellar, basement, ground floor, first, second third, fourth floor and the attic. The Annex to the Terms of reference contained the number of connections by levels. |
| Designing of the cable infrastructure of the computer network should follow the principles of structural cabling, under the international standards. The cable infrastructure of the cable network should consist of two distinct wholes: |
| |
The Backbone – infrastructure connecting the main cable concentrator of the building with the floor cable concentrators. |
| |
Peripheral wiring – segments connected to the backbone of the computer network end up at the connecting points |
| The cable routes should be designed within the building of the University Child Clinic so as to meet the requirements of the cable infrastructure of the computer network |
| To enable connection of all the working units and services of interest into the single computer network. The Annex to the Terms of reference contained the survey of organizational wholes of the University Child Clinic with the estimated number of computer connections |
| To ensure high reliability of the network and resistance to the environmental impact surrounding the communication equipment and communication routes |
|
To ensure scalability of computer network which means the possibility of easy and quick upgrading provided full operability.
|
| Predvideti mogućnost realizacije multimedijalnih servisa kao što su prenos videa, glasa i slike. Predložiti tehnike i protokole za realizaciju ovih zahtevnih servisa. |
| To allow connectivity of the computer network to Internet services to the users. To propose protection measures against undesirable entry from Internet to the internal computer network. |
| To plan the realization of multimedia services such as transmission of video, voice, and image. To propose techniques and protocols for realization of so demanding services. |
| |
| The implementation stage of the cable system of the computer network along the principles of structural cabling was completed in the shortest possible timeframe according to all international standards.
The cable system of hierarchical star system was applied. The main connections between the concentrators which form the star structure are presented in the figure with full line. In some cases, due to high security demands, reliability or throughput of the network, additional connections were implemented |
 |
| between the concentrator of the neighboring or the same hierarchical levels (for example between the main concentrator of the building and any of the floor concentrators or between two floor concentrators). The result of the first stage of the project is presented at the figure below. |
 |
| |
| In the next stage Cisco IP telephone system based on the transmission of digitalized voice signal was implemented, encapsulated into IP package. Furthermore, the private telephone exchange was based on the switching of IP package. Such a solution enabled the use for transmission of the voice package the single cable infrastructure which thus far was used solely for data transmission. Hence, cable structure which forms the telephone network is used for telephone conversation. |
