MPLS PTT Net
MDS has continued its year-long cooperation with our largest Internet provider PTT Net within the project of introduction of MPLS network. The development of Internet provider PTT Net was characterized by permanent growth of subscribers, expansion of available technical facilities for Internet access (ADSL, cable, dial-up, leased lines...), introduction of additional services (server hosting, VPDN, VPN) and higher transmission capacities of both the links within PTT Net network and links towards the Internet. To maintain the present growth trend means to further enhance communication infrastructure enabling the introduction of new services and optimum utilization of transmission routes. Hence, the introduction of MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) technology imposed itself as a logical step towards future development of PTT Net network. The main motivation for MPLS technology is the possibility of offering value-added services next to the simple Internet access.

PostNet is a corporate network of PE PTT Srbija, including the business units of the Enterprise and 750 Post Offices throughout the Republic. The network is organized around four regional nodes in: Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Niš, interconnected to links of 2Mbps capacity. Local centers are connected to those regional nodes of the same link capacity. The Post Offices are connected to the network by synchronous and asynchronous leased connections, dial-on-links or via L2TP/L2F VPDN service.

Connection of PostNet network to PTT Net network is done at the sites of the regional and local centers of PTTNet network, since the network equipment of PTT Net and PostNet network are situated at the same place. This way of networking will enable the networking devices within the regional and local centers of PostNet network to use the devices and link routes of IP/MPLS network of PTT Net, providing for the existing functionality of PostNet network, while preserving the internal routing protocol and address schemes.

The introduction of MPLS technology into PTT Net network gives this provider a competitive edge at the local market of Internet and communication services, because it opens up the possibility of implementing new advanced services. PTT Net is the second to Telekom Srbija local market Internet provider offering data transmission based on MPLS technologies. This along with the prestige of the state-of-the-art solutions brings about more than one concrete technical advantage implying wider range of services of guaranteed good quality to the customers. As far as the Public Enterprise PTT Serbia is concerned, MPLS technology means the integration of IP communication infrastructure of the enterprise, which thus far was divided into two independent networks, and cost effectiveness of leased transmission links.
